Doing raids in Pokemon GO has been a part of a trainers life, besides catching some Pokemon, Battling in Gyms, finishing the new Research system or just walking around hatching some eggs. There are a lot of reasons why do people doing raids, we might be raiding for fun, killing boredom, testing your Pokemon's Team strength or maybe trying to get those catchy Legendaries.
Raids are divided into five (5) difficulties ranging from the easiest (Tier 1 raids) to hardest (Tier 5 raids). Harder raids will give a more decent reward than easier raids. For example, Tier 5 raids will always grant you a chance to catch some Legendaries. But that is not the end of it, there are rewards that are far better than just normal Legendaries, a chance to fight the Legendary Mewtwo.
Mewtwo, so far, is only obtainable from Ex-Raid, a raid which only happens every once every week and will only be available to those holding the tickets. We will discuss everything that we knew about Ex-Raid in the following article, so get ready because it will be very long (maybe).
1. What is an Ex-Raid?
Ex-Raid, by definition, is an Extra Raid (I do not know if it is correct or not), or maybe Extraordinary Raid. There is nothing special about Ex-Raid except that it only available at certain places and at a certain time, you will need certain Ex-Raid Entry Tickets to get into the battle, you will always fight the mighty Mewtwo and it will be somehow frustrating when you miss one (believe me, I did several times).
Ex-Raid is actually counted as Tier 5 Raid, so yes, you will get the same prize as if you are Raiding normal Tier 5 raid.
2. How do we get an Ex-Raid invitation?
Niantic said that Ex-Raid invitation will be given to those worthy enough, but actually, you will only need to win a raid no matter which Tier at least once after an Ex-Raid battle for given week is over. For example, there is an Ex-Raid at 25th of May 2018, to get the next invitation for the same Gyms, you will need at least win a raid between 26th of May 2018 up to 6th of June 2018, or before the next wave of invitation is sent (usually seven days after the Ex-Raid battle).
There is a rumor spreading around the community lately, saying that people are getting invitation even if they are not having any raids lately. We have been trying to prove the rumor but unfortunately, I was tempted to do a raid anyway. We still don't know if it is a bug or whatever, but then again you might try your luck.
3. Where are those Ex-Raid Gyms anyway?
Unfortunately, I don't know every single Gym that held Ex-Raid, but you could ask your community about the exact location. If you haven't had any community in your social media, I have some suggestion for you, try looking for the community from Facebook, Discord or other social media (Pokemon GO do have a lot of Community) or try your luck by raiding in Parks around you.
4. I have found the Community, but the Gyms are so far away from my house, can I get an Ex-Raid from a Gym around my house?
It depends, if the Gym around your house is located on a green area (Park for example), there aren't any Gyms that held Ex-Raid based on S2 cells map around your house, then you can.
Ex-Raid Gym could be triggered based on several indicators, you might search for that article because it is very specific and I could not talk about that in this article. The keyword might be "How to Trigger an Ex-Raid"
5. I am a fan of Mewtwo! Can I get like 10 invitations a week?
I'm glad if you like Mewtwo that much, but unfortunately, you couldn't. Every Ex-Raid Gym will only give invitation one week prior to an Ex-Raid and it will be given one week after an Ex-Raid. Every player could only get one invitation every week so that means you will only be able to get one Mewtwo in every wave. But there is something funny about the invitation, while a Gym will only hold an Ex-Raid every 2 weeks, an invitation will be sent every weak. "How is that possible?", you may ask. It is possible because not every Gym will send the invitation at the same week, some Gyms will send their invitations one day before the other Gym Ex-Raid battle.
For Example, I usually get an Ex-Pass from Gym A and I know that Gym B, C, and D will also give Ex-Pass at the same time so I won't be able to get an invitation from those Gyms if I get an invitation from Gym A. Then one of my friends said that Gym E, which he usually does raids, sometimes gave him an Ex-Pass but it is not on the same day as I do. After knowing that I tried to do some raids at Gym E, then it gave me an invitation one day prior to Gym A Ex-Raid.
From that scenario, we could conclude that Gym E has a different Ex-Raid schedule than the rest of the Gyms and yes, that is actually happening in the real world. Based on that, the actual schedule of invitation distribution is one day prior to an Ex-Raid battle. So, keep that in mind and catch as much as possible.
6. I want to get some invitation, can I get it by doing Tier 1 raid?
Yes, you can, the only thing that is needed to get an invitation letter is just by doing and winning a raid, whichever the Tier is. I've tried it with my friends doing a Tier 1 raid (a Magikarp raid to be exact) and both of us getting an invitation letter on the following day.
7. If I do a lot of Raid battles in a lot of different Gyms that held an Ex-Raid which one will give me an invitation?
This is where the mechanics that Niantic said might be used. I usually only do the raid at one Gym that holds an Ex-Raid, that is why we could assume they will always give an invitation no matter what. But if you did a lot of Raid battles in several Ex-Raid Gyms, then the one that might give you an invitation is the one which you've got the highest Badge may be randomized. So, if you want to get an invitation from a certain Gym, then I suggest that you should only do raids at that gym and other gyms that do not hold an Ex-Raid.
8. Why do we fight Mewtwo anyway? Is it even good?
To be honest, Mewtwo is not that useful for me. But maybe it is because I always raid using the recommended party (it is actually recommended though). While Mewtwo could deal massive damage and a good generalist, its defense is somewhat low compared to several Legendaries like Kyogre and Lugia. But then again, Mewtwo is a good attacker against Fighting and Poison (Psychic Mewtwo), Psychic and Ghost (Shadow Ball Mewtwo), Rock breaker (Focus Blast Mewtwo) or as a useless generalist (Hyperbeam Mewtwo). At least, Mewtwo with Shadow Ball could be used to fight against itself.
9. Is there any Pokemon besides Mewtwo as a reward?
At the meantime, no. But I think there might be another Pokemon dwelling inside the Ex-Raid League but we still don't know what it will be. Based on Niantic pattern from releasing Pokemon, there might be several parameters that would make a Pokemon goes into Ex-Raid or normal raid. Example, from our beloved Mewtwo, the Pokemon should be not a part of any Legendary Pokemon Group (ex. Legendary Birds, Eons Duo, etc), it should be a Legendary and it should be Bad-Ass. The only Pokemon that came to mind is Regigigas. Why? Because even if it is the leader of Regi- trio, it is not a part of it, it is a legendary (Mythical Pokemon might go into research) and it is a Bad-Ass Normal Legendary.
You should take a note that even if Deoxys and Arceus are not as cute as Mew an Jirachi and they are Bad-Ass enough, they are actually Mythical, yes they are not Legendary.
10. Is there any chance that I won't get an invitation even if I have done a raid?
From my experience, I doubt you won't get any. Even I could get it from a Magikarp raid (yes, it is a Magikarp, your everyday splashing Magikarp) and my Gym always had about 100 accounts that do an Ex-Raid each wave, so, you should get it one way or another.
I think that should be enough for this article, if there is something that is not correct about it or you want to ask something else, feel free to contact me. Ciao. Adios.
